Spiral: Perspectives on an African-American Art Collective comes to New York's Studio Museum in Harlem

Emma Amos works are on view as part of this Spiral's retrospective.

Spiral: Perspectives on an African-American Art Collective presents works by members of the historic Spiral group, taking as its starting point a recent exhibition of the same name at the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama. It now makes its way to the Studio Museum in Harlem.

It was organized by Lauren Haynes, Assistant Curator, in collaboration with Emily G. Hanna, PhD, Curator of the Arts of Africa and Americas at the Birmingham Museum of Art.

Talk at Birmingham Museum in Alabama

Emma Amos was invited and spoke about her work since the Spiral Group to her latest paintings. In addition to showing Measuring Measuring, part of the Museum's collection, its chief curator, Emily Hanna, is preparing an exhibition on the Spiral Group for December 2010, which will feature some of Emma's works from that period.

Emma Amos awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in July 2010.

Solo Show at Flomenhaft

Emma has a solo show at Flomenhaft Gallery that includes her newest paintings and prints. It opened Thursday, January 14, and runs until Saturday, February 27.

The triptych Emma has been working on since March is still underway. After some planning, a few of the narrow border strips have been attached. The rest are still being worked out.

Emma has also been making a lot of prints with the help of Kathy Caraccio,

and, in lieu of going to the beach, making a summery little beach painting.

On April 16, Emma gave the Eighth Annual David C. Driskell Lecture in the Visual Arts at the University of Maryland's David C. Driskell Center. Or, more accurately, she shared the stage with Professor Driskell himself, and the lecture was in the form of a discussion between the two of them.
