Solo Show at Flomenhaft

Emma has a solo show at Flomenhaft Gallery that includes her newest paintings and prints. It opened Thursday, January 14, and runs until Saturday, February 27.

Emma spent October as a guest at Yaddo, where she made three new paintings, shown here with their borders not yet applied:

The triptych Emma has been working on since March is still underway. After some planning, a few of the narrow border strips have been attached. The rest are still being worked out.

Emma has also been making a lot of prints with the help of Kathy Caraccio,

and, in lieu of going to the beach, making a summery little beach painting.

On April 16, Emma gave the Eighth Annual David C. Driskell Lecture in the Visual Arts at the University of Maryland's David C. Driskell Center. Or, more accurately, she shared the stage with Professor Driskell himself, and the lecture was in the form of a discussion between the two of them.

She spoke briefly about how she came to be invited to join Spiral when she was in her early twenties and fresh out of art school, while none of the much more prominent black women artists of the day—such as Vivian Browne and Faith Ringgold—were asked, and about how this exclusion of women continues in the art world today.

Heroes and Folk

Exeter Academy’s Lamont Gallery is hosting a solo exhibition of Emma’s work, titled Heroes and Folk. The show opened on November 16, but the reception and gallery talk will not take place until January, so you have plenty of time to get to New Hampshire.

Reception: Friday, January 8, 6:30–8 pm
Gallery Talk: Saturday, January 9, 10 am

Works in the show include Muse Picasso and Muhammad Ali. It closes on Saturday, January 23, 2010.
